Keep the number readable
Use even light and keep the camera parallel to the identification plate. Check the image before sending so all characters can be read.
Show context as well
Include a wider view of the component and relevant connections. This helps relate the marking to the actual assembly.
Keep machine details with the image
Send the machine make, model and serial number alongside the photo. If a character is unclear, say so instead of guessing.
